26/09/2011 :Gove is wrong: all children are entitled to a qualified teacher, says Labour:

One of Reading Labour Party’s conference delegates, Councillor Marian Livingston, pressed shadow Education Secretary Andy Burnham MP today for a pledge to fight for every child to be taught by qualified teachers, and was delighted when he promised Labour would take that battle all the way to the House of Lords.

Cllr. Livingston, herself a retired teacher and now a school Governor, says: “Parents supporting Michael Gove’s ‘free schools’ may not realise that he wants to allow those schools to employ people with no teaching qualifications to teach their children, that they as parents will have no guarantee that teachers will have been trained, will refresh their skills and knowledge, will be on a professional register, or will understand the boundaries within which they have to behave. It’s a nightmare scenario and I was delighted to get Andy Burnham’s promise that Labour members in the Commons and the Lords will be trying to kick this madness into touch.”
