Labour’s Rachel Eden, Lead Councillor for Housing & Neighbourhoods in Reading, is calling for action from Reading’s MP’s after the leaking in The Observer at the weekend of a letter from Eric Pickles’ office warning David Cameron that the Conservative-led Government’s welfare reforms would make 40,000 families homeless and put a huge burden on Council finances – actually increasing the cost to the taxpayer.
“Here in Reading we’ve known for months that the Government’s proposals would be likely to strain the council’s resources, while causing problems for many residents” she says, “but what is shocking is the fact that the Conservative-led Government has also known this since January. It demonstrates what a shambles the government is in for it to be pressing ahead with a policy that costs more and will make thousands homeless. I am calling on Reading’s MPs to meet with us and to withdraw their support for these proposals before they hit families in Reading.”
