21/03/2011 :Labour calls for the budget to tackle Britain’s record youth unemployment:

Labour’s candidate for Church Ward, Paul Woodward, who works with young people, has led calls locally for urgent action in next week’s budget to tackle youth unemployment, which is now at its highest since records began.

Paul Woodward says: “Those Tory posters a year ago jeering at Gordon Brown over youth unemployment look pretty sick now under a Tory Government we have about a million young people out of work nationwide – the result of cutting back investment, squeezing family budgets, increasing VAT, and cancelling the Future Jobs Fund and other schemes Labour had in place to get young people into work.

“Tory M.P. Rob Wilson can only run a successful jobs fair if there are more jobs available! He should be supporting the call from Ed Milliband and Ed Balls for the tax on bank bonuses to be retained, not ended, and for £600 Million to be put into a fund for youth jobs, with the rest going into construction and a regional growth fund and into cancelling the VAT rise on petrol to get prices down. But he won’t because the Conservative Party gets more than half its funding from the City.

“Without urgent action now,” Mr Woodward says, “young people in this area and across the country face a bleak future, victims of a government that is cutting for cutting’s sake.”
