Ed Miliband, one of the leading contenders for the Labour leadership, met with party supporters, members and local people on Saturday as part of his campaign to be the next Labour Leader.
Ed spent time with supporters to set out his values, particularly tackling the inequality that exists in society and the gap between rich and poor, and his commitment to reinvigorating debate within the party and among all supporters on how together we achieve this.
Ed listened carefully to the fears of local people about how the Government's deep cuts to public services and the Lib Dem - Conservative coalition running Reading Council will damage the town, and unfairly affect the most vulnerable people in Reading.
Following the visit Ed Miliband said: ‘It was inspiring to meet so many people, particularly new members of the party, who are so committed to the values that we share. People in Reading are worried about what the cuts will mean, but I am in no doubt that the local party will campaign as hard as they can to ensure the voices of those who will be unfairly affected by service cuts and VAT rises will be heard.'
Sarah King, chair of Reading and District Labour Party said: "Ed made clear he champions tackling inequality within society, which is really important to people here and something we in the local Labour Party applaud. His approach of being proud of Labour’s achievements - such as the minimum wage, investing in education and developing tax credits to help people into work - while acknowledging that mistakes were made by the last Government, is a very positive one. We can all learn from this and move forward."
