20/06/10 :All Saints: give the parents time, says Labour:
Minster Labour Councillors have stepped in to support local parents who want to see All Saints Infants expanded to a Primary but are worried that August
House next door will be sold off by the ConDem Coalition on Reading Council before the parents, and the Oxford Diocese, have a chance to see if they can raise the money to take it over and refurbish it.
Cllr. Debbie Watson has put down a motion for the Council meeting on 29 June which reads:
This council commends the efforts of parents and staff and the local
community to expand All Saints Infants School in order for it to
become a full Primary. It notes that the Reading Borough Council
property known as August House, which is adjacent to the school, has
been identified as the only building which could be developed to
accommodate the necessary increase in space required for the
expansion.
To support the aims of the school to expand, this Council asks Cabinet to
continue to suspend any moves to realise a capital receipt from August
House in order to give All Saints the time to explore all funding options for the expansion of the school.
Cllr. Watson says: “All Saints is our only Infant School not paired with a Junior School, and that is a real issue for parents, particularly with growing pressure on school places in West Reading. I have visited the school and listened to the parents, I do get where they are coming from and think we owe them the chance to see if they can make it work.”
Shadow Lead Councillor for Education Jon Hartley adds: “This campaign started when Labour was running the Council and we suspended the marketing of August House to allow the idea to be explored. The new ConDem coalition is being very unclear about where they stand on this issue and this resolution is aimed at giving the school and parents the clarity – and the time – they need to explore all the options. This is the position the Labour administration took and we want to press the coalition hard to come into line.”
