As the election campaign enters its final week, Labour candidate Naz Sarkar says it has become clearer and clearer what a Tory victory would mean for Britain, and for Reading, and that the only way in which people in Reading West can stop that is to give their backing to Labour on May 6th.
"What we now know," they say, "is that the Tories would
- End free nursery places and cut Sure Start
- Chop tax credits and Child Trust Funds
- Cut school budgets so there will be fewer teachers
- Cut police budgets so there will be fewer police officers
- Ratchet up Council house rents and end security of tenure
- Make further "swingeing cuts" and ratchet up unemployment
"Mr Cameron and his colleagues have had ample opportunities to deny these statements, including in the leaders' broadcasts," he goes on, "and they have not taken those opportunities. So when Mr Cameron calls for decisive government, these are the decisions he wants that government to take.
"So, to quote Bruce Forsyth, it's decision time, decision time for voters. Voters actually in both the Reading constituencies who do not support the Tory programme of cuts know that on May 7th they will wake up either with a Tory MP who supports that programme of cuts or a Labour MP who doesn't - none of the recent polls would lead in these seats to any other outcome - and we hope and call for their support. A future fair for all is what Labour is about, and we think most voters believe in that too."
