27/03/10 :Reading Labour welcome £106,600 cash injection to plug potholes:

Councillor Tony Page, Lead Councillor for Transport, and Anneliese Dodds and Naz Sarkar (Labour candidates for Reading East and West, respectively) have welcomed the announcement in the budget of extra funds to deal with the town's potholes.

Reading is set to receive £106,600 extra to sort out the legacy of this winter's bad weather for our roads. This funding comes on top of a trebling of government investment for local road maintenance over the past decade, and new plans to ensure utility companies take their responsibilities seriously to repair roads properly after carrying out works. Reading Borough Council will need to produce a report following use of the funds, to indicate how they have been used to tackle local potholes.

Councillor Page said: "I’m grateful that the Chancellor has recognized the need to help Reading Borough Council in dealing with the damage to our roads caused by the recent severe weather conditions. We have already responded better than our neighbouring authorities and we still have 11 full-time gangs dealing with emergency pot-holes. This extra assistance is very much appreciated and would not have happened under a Tory Government committed to early and deep cuts in public spending.”

Anneliese said: "I know that Reading Borough has been working hard to fix potholes- and seems to be doing a better job than many neighbouring local authorities. However, we do still have a significant problem on some roads, with deep potholes which can damage cars and in addition cause severe accidents for cyclists. I am pleased to hear that Reading will be getting this cash boost to help plug our potholes as soon as possible".

And Naz said: "This is a welcome cash injection following the severe weather conditions. I am glad Reading has received its share of the national money to upgrade our road surfaces".
