14/03/10 :It's "Vote Red, Get Green" says Labour:

In a twist on a slogan long-abandoned by the Conservatives, Reading Labour Party is posting on its website (www.readinglabour.org.uk) a detailed 35-point check-list of its actions on and off the Council over the years (Labour's Green Record in Reading) , laying claim to being the political party in Reading which has led consistently on the green agenda, from extending the town's open spaces to facing up to the challenge of climate change.

Paul Gittings, Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, says: "When it comes to the environment and tackling climate change I am very proud that in Reading it's the Labour Party who have backed up aspiration with effective action towards our goal of becoming a low-carbon city of the future."

And Tony Page, Lead Councillor for Strategic Planning and Transport, adds: "Ministers praised Reading's Transport Innovation Fund bid as pioneering and used it as a benchmark for setting up their new Urban Challenge Fund. Reading already has better public transport than most other towns, and our UCF bid will help us go up another level."

Labour's candidate for Reading West, Naz Sarkar, says: "We had a major triumph last week when developers PRUPIM finally abandoned their plans to build 7500 houses on Kennet Meadows, the latest victory in 25 years of determined Labour-led campaigns to protect the Meadows. This level of commitment runs in Reading Labour's DNA."

And Anneliese Dodds adds: "Naz and I signed up to the 10:10 climate change challenge on day one, we joined calls for international action before Copenhagen, and I was the first politician locally to support the plans for a wind farm at Rushy Mead. I am proud of my politics on this issue and willing to defend my stance in any forum. My Conservative opponent has refused to attend the GREN hustings in Reading East and that I think shows his apparent fear of the whole green agenda."
