Anneliese Dodds, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Reading East, led a street stall in Broad Street on Saturday (7th March) to raise awareness of International Women's Day. In particular the stall highlighted the work Labour had done to tackle violence against women and asked passers-by what more they would like to be done.
Labour has made tackling violence against women a priority over the last twelve years, with a bigger focus on prosecuting for rape, a new specialist unit to tackle forced marriages, and education of teenagers about violence in relationships.
Anneliese said "Although incidence rates of domestic violence are down by 64% and there has been an increase in rape convictions of 50% in the last 10 years, more can be done and we want to hear ideas from the public"
The cold didn't deter the many shoppers who stopped to chat and give their views and take away information. |
