20/12/09 :Richard McKenzie condemns "Greenspin" on Crescent Road site:
Green candidate Rob White has been accused of "Greenspin" over an attempt to pretend that Reading Borough Council has earmarked the playing fields at Crescent Road for development, and even apparently telling the press that a planning application was expected next year.
Labour candidate for Park Ward Richard McKenzie immediately asked Lead Councillor for Planning & Transport Tony Page for a briefing (see briefing here).
Richard says: "Firstly, the site is not earmarked by the Council, but is one of a large number of sites across town put forward by developers and others which the Council had a duty to consult on. Secondly, that consultation closed on 13 November, long before Mr White launched his "campaign". Thirdly, Tony Page is clear that the site is to remain allocated for educational purposes and, if it is subsequently found not to have educational uses, the actual playing fields would be safeguarded and would not be built on - ever. And fourthly, and I have no idea where this has come from, the Council is certainly not expecting a planning application next year - or indeed at any time."
And he adds: "As a local resident and a Governor of Alfred Sutton School, I am as aware as anyone of the importance of these playing fields and committed to their protection. I really resent the Green Party deliberately setting out to mislead and rouse needless anxiety among local people. This is a sort of 'Greenspin' Reading politics can really do without."
