10/12/09 :Anneliese and Naz welcome Pre-Budget Report's "firm and steady focus on recovery":
Anneliese Dodds and Naz Sarkar, Labour's parliamentary candidates for Reading East and West, respectively, have welcomed the Pre-Budget Report's focus on securing the recovery, taking the tough choices necessary to halve the deficit in four years, and protecting vital frontline public services.
Anneliese said: "The Pre-Budget Report has provided a comprehensive plan for securing recovery by continuing Labour's boost to small businesses. No less than 61 arrangements to provide support through the Business Payments Support Scheme have been made in Reading- that totals £16million in deferred tax for local businesses over the last year. It is excellent news that this Support Scheme will be continued for as long as it is needed. It's also great news to see that the Government has heeded calls for promoting jobs, with its new £400million 'green growth' package ".
And Naz said: " Labour is the only party in British politics deeply committed to protecting frontline public services. Even in tough times, Labour has shown that it will protect investment in frontline schools, the NHS frontline , Sure Start, and police numbers over the next 3 years. And Labour is also acting to help those most vulnerable in society, like pensioners, who will receive an extra £50 this winter alongside their winter fuel payment".
But both warned that recovery was threatened by the Conservatives should they get into power.
Anneliese said: "Virtually every Tory measure targets the best-off rather than struggling families and businesses. The Tories' inheritance tax cut would help only the wealthiest 3% of estates. Their plans to reverse fairer Pension Relief Rules would benefit only the 1.5% of top pension savers; and plans to abolish the 50p income tax rate would help only the top 1% of earners".
And Naz said: "The problems with the Tories' tax cuts are that they would benefit the very best off, but be paid for by ordinary people. For example, they are committed to slashing the Tax Credits that many middle-income Reading families rely on, and abandoning all the 'Real Help Now' measures that are already benefitting local businesses and homeowners".
