04/12/09 :Community Care in Reading "performing well" - and caring for more people too :

Lead Councillor for Community Care Mike Orton has welcomed a report from the Care Quality Commission which says Reading's community care services are "performing well".

And he points out that Reading, which supports people in "significant" and "greater moderate" need as well as "critical" is caring for more elderly and vulnerable people than any other Council in Berkshire. There are about 2800 people cared for by Reading who would not qualify for help if they lived in Wokingham and West Berkshire, and West Berkshire have now started rationing care even for those in critical need.

"We see care of the elderly and vulnerable as a key priority," he adds, "and have made a clear decision not to cut back on this. I am glad to see that the Care Quality Commission has recognised the major improvements and changes that are being made to our services, improvements that we are of course determined will continue."

The results of the CQC Annual Performance Assessment for 2008/9 were published on December 3rd. The CQC assessed the Council's performance against seven key criteria -improved health and well-being, quality of life, making a positive contribution, increased choice and control, freedom from discrimination and harassment, economic well-being and maintaining personal dignity and respect.

The review process gave the Council particular praise for its leadership of the adult social care service and joint working with agencies and organisations, working together to deliver the best possible service for Reading residents.
