29/11/09 : John Ennis: "I welcome Ed Balls' drive to boost the status of social workers" :
Reading's Lead Councillor for Children's Services John Ennis has endorsed new proposals in a review led by Camden Chief Executive Moira Gibb, and accepted by Children's Secretary Ed Balls, to improve the status of social workers, saying that the job of protecting children is tough and stressful and should be properly recognised by society.
The proposals include the formation of a Royal College of Social Work, to sit alongside the Royal College of Nursing, and also a probationary year, more training on the job, and higher pay to keep experienced workers committed to high professional standards on the front line.
Cllr. Ennis says "This Government has done a lot to improve the status of teachers and I am delighted they are now doing that for social workers too. Social workers do in a way hold children's lives in their hands, their careers are always on the line, and they do they have a responsibility comparable to that of nursing and in which they need to be supported.
"I think the Tory and LibDem parties nationally were wrong to try and score political points by attacking the setting up of the taskforce under Moira Gibb, and I think she has produced a good solid report. Ed Balls' speedy acceptance of her report shows how seriously committed he is to safeguarding children."
