02/09/09 : Labour at Reading Gay Pride: Tories should break with Polish Law & Justice Party over gay rights :

Labour members at Reading's Gay Pride on Saturday will be gathering signatures for a petition calling on the Tory MEPs for the South-East - Daniel Hannan, Richard Ashworth, Nirj Deva and James Elles - to withdraw from the European Conservative & Reformists Group so long as the Polish Law & Justice Party remain members.

Labour candidate for Reading East, Anneliese Dodds, who will be running Labour's stall at the festival, says: "It is a national scandal that, since June, the British Tories have been joined at the hip in the European Parliament with the Polish Law & Justice Party - whose leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, says homosexuality would lead to 'the downfall of civilisation'. When his brother, now President of Poland, was Mayor of Warsaw he actually banned Gay Pride marches in the capital. And the Tories are now in a group led by a founder member of the Kaczynskis' party. It all makes David Cameron's 'apology' for Section 28 ring very hollow."

The petition, also on-line at www.gopetition.co.uk/online/30496.html, reads as follows:
We believe the views of the Polish Law & Justice Party, particularly as regards gay rights, are so unacceptable that it was wrong for the British Conservative MEPs to join forces with them in the European Parliament. We call on the Conservative MEPs for the South-East Region to withdraw from the European Conservatives & Reformists Group so long as the Polish Law & Justice Party remain members.
