02/09/09 : Climate Change: Labour duo back new 10:10 campaign to reduce emissions :
The two Labour Parliamentary candidates for Reading, Anneliese Dodds and Naz Sarkar, are the first politicians locally to back the 10:10 campaign launched in The Guardian yesterday and pledge to cut their own Carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010.
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband has also endorsed the campaign to help mobilise public support for a global climate deal that's ambitious, effective and fair at December's Copenhagen summit. He says this means "ambitious cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, keeping countries to their word and supporting poorer countries in adapting to climate change."
Anneliese Dodds says: "The 10:10 campaign shows that a little effort by everyone can make a massive difference. Cutting my use of carbon by 10% will be difficult- I've already cut down on inefficient heating and lighting (and saved on bills in the process). But the 10:10 campaign has made me think about my use of energy at work, and whether I can reduce this too. Hopefully it will encourage many others to do the same - this is something on which we can all play a part."
Naz Sarkar says: "Time is running out, and failure at Copenhagen would be awful news for our planet. I would urge everybody to get behind this campaign, and get their friends, their employers, their customers - whoever they can influence - to think about signing up too. People can pledge their support at www.1010uk.org"
And Cllr. Paul Gittings, Reading's Lead Councillor for the Environment, wants the Council to join many other organisations, including major companies, a Premiership football club, other Councils, NHS trusts, many individuals of all walks of life, in endorsing the campaign. He says: "The 10:10 campaign is the brainchild of Franny Armstrong, who made The Age of Stupid, a powerful documentary about our failure to tackle climate change, and links well to the Reading Climate Change pledge I launched at Forbury Fever. It is our duty as a Council to lead by example on climate change and I will be moving a motion backing the 10:10 campaign at the next meeting."
