01/09/09 : Make Kennet Meadows a Trust - On-Line Petition launched :

Local people are being urged to sign an on-line petition which has been launched to promote the campaign to make Kennet Meadows, the area between Reading and the M4, a trust in order to give it long-term protection.

The campaign was kicked off by a motion moved by Southcote Labour Councillor, and veteran Kennet Meadows campaigner, Pete Ruhemann at a Reading Borough Council meeting before the summer holidays. The motion received all-party support, and the Council Chief Executive has already written to his opposite number in West Berkshire, to suggest the two Councils, both of which have long opposed development in Kennet Meadows, work together to achieve this aim.

Pete says "Every five years or so, starting in the early 1980's, Kennet Meadows has been under threat, whether from gravel companies or from builders. The latest, from a consortium led by Prudential's property arm, PRUPIM, who wanted to build 7500 houses there, suffered a major setback when, following yet another campaign by local people, the Department for Communities and Local Government took it out of the South-East Plan because of the flood risk it posed to the area and to central Reading. What this petition is about is getting these threats to stop, giving the area protection into the future, and getting it managed for the benefit of local people."
