24/05/09 : Peter Skinner MEP "Only Labour is fighting for you in Europe" :
Labour Member of the European Parliament Peter Skinner, who is heading the Labour ticket on 4 June, says this election "represents a clear opportunity for the people of the South East of England to stand up for progressive policies that help ordinary people and to reject once and for all the failed policies of the Conservatives. It is also about a balanced, sensible and pro-European approach versus the dated and stale Little England policies of the past.
"As your Labour MEP," he adds in an open letter to constituents, "I have travelled all over the South East, listening to your concerns and seeing the effects of our work in the European Parliament. This has led to me believe more firmly now than ever that being involved in the centre of European politics is crucial to protecting the interests of Britain and Europe in the World. Whether it is animal rights, consumer protection, development, fair trade, regulating multinational companies or looking out for Britons in the workplace, the European Parliament is THE main battlefield, and my fellow Labour MEPs and I are here fighting for you!
"Compare that to the approach of the Conservative Party which has rejoiced in retreating from the mainstream of European politics by abandoning its place in the main centre-right block in the Parliament, drastically reducing its ability to influence what goes on.
"And while British elections should be, and normally are, contests between established parties, fringe groups such as the BNP are gunning for seats this year from which to push their hate-filled and xenophobic policies and they must be stopped for the good of all!
"Particularly at this time of economic recession you need a strong Labour team in Brussels fighting for you! That's why you should use your vote, and vote Labour, on 4 June."
