01/02/09 : Changes to Reading’s Cabinet :

A pact between the Conservatives and LibDems on the Council has forced the resignation from the Cabinet of Labour Councillor Pete Ruhemann, Lead Councillor for Children’s Services.

The opposition parties based their call for Pete Ruhemann’s resignation on an OFSTED report into safeguarding services, but chose to ignore the part of the report which said “The council acknowledges the continuing seriousness of the safeguarding problems identified in this report and lead councillors and the new chief executive are providing strong leadership by driving through urgent measures to ensure rapid improvement within six months” and the real evidence that those measures were paying off (see Council acts to keep children safe, 13/01/2009).

The new Lead Councillor for Children’s Services is John Ennis, formerly Lead Councillor for Housing. He says: “Labour is totally committed to making Reading a good place in which to grow up, and a great deal of progress has been made since Every Child Matters came in. I am looking forward to the challenge of taking that work forward and building on the improvements that have been made.”

John Ennis’ successor as Lead Councillor for Housing is Deborah Edwards, who says: “I fully support the desire of Reading Council tenants to stay with the Council, and look forward to working with officers and with the Reading Federation of Tenants & Residents’ Associations to secure that, and to make sure Reading stays a good landlord. And I am keen that the Council should also support tenants of private landlords and home-owners in difficulty, particularly during this global economic crisis, so I am very aware of the huge challenge ahead.”
