11/12/08 : Labour puts Reading’s housing case to Margaret Beckett :

Reading West MP Martin Salter and Lead Councillor for Housing John Ennis took advantage of a visit to Reading by Cabinet Minister for Housing and Planning Margaret Beckett MP to press her about housing issues in the town.

Mrs Beckett was at the Madejski Hotel to press for action to prevent mortgage repossessions caused by the current credit crunch, prior to Gordon Brown’s announcement of new measures to protect home owners caught by unemployment or loss of income.

Martin Salter said: “I remember the early 1990s when the Tory government stood aside as 2000 homes were repossessed in Reading and families were left to struggle on their own. I want local councils and housing associations to be able to buy up empty properties or to take an equity stake in homes at risk of repossession. Everything possible must be done to avoid the horror of homelessness.”

Councillor John Ennis said: “I welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Minister of Housing, Margaret Beckett, and make her aware of the numbers of people on Reading’s housing waiting list. We lobbied for assistance to either build new council homes to alleviate this need or to be able to take over empty private homes and house families that are being made homeless through repossession.

“Giving people a chance to have a decent home to rent or buy at a price they can afford is a key priority for Reading’s Labour Council, and we are looking to the Labour Government to support us in that.”
