07/11/08 : Reading Labour welcomes Barack Obama’s “historic victory”:

Members of Reading Labour Party have been quick to welcome the election of Democrat Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States.

Reading West MP Martin Salter says: “I’m so happy for America and for the world. The ending of the foul and hateful Republican administration in the USA is something all progressive people everywhere will be celebrating. Barack Obama is a brave and inspirational leader and will hopefully re-establish his country as a force for good once again.

“I was awake half the night watching the results and getting texts from America where staff from my Westminster office have been part of a huge Labour team working for the Obama campaign in the battleground states. My first indication that history was about to be made was when I heard that young people and African-Caribbean people in Ohio had voted in numbers never seen before.

“So a hard line conservative administration has been thrown out of office and the Democrats, Labour’s sister party, will be back in the White House. I have no doubt that Gordon Brown and Barack Obama will forge a formidable alliance to meet the challenges of these difficult economic times.”

Anneliese Dodds, Labour’s spokesperson for Reading East, is also delighted. “As America’s first black President,” she says, “Obama’s election has already made history. I hope his term of office will be equally momentous, enabling the US to rebuild its reputation on the international stage and domestically, and to target the crushing poverty that so shames America.”

“It will be interesting to see the Tory response to this news,” she adds, “particularly as back in 2006 David Cameron welcomed the Republicans’ John McCain to his first party conference as leader!”

And Labour Leader of the Council Jo Lovelock says: “I have never known people in Reading follow an American election so closely. I think we all see Obama’s election as offering the world hope for the future, for real international co-operation on the financial crisis, on climate change and on so much else where George Bush has been part of the problem rather than part of the solution.”
