22/10/08 : Reading secondary school results “the best ever” :

A triple triumph for Reading’s secondary schools this summer as they:
Got better A level results than anywhere else in the country, outscoring all the 149 other English Councils
For the first time achieved GCSE results well above the national average
Recorded a huge drop in the number of children leaving school with no qualifications
Official figures show the average points score for Reading's A level students was 880 per student compared to 734 nationally.
52.5% of GCSE students in Reading schools passed five or more grade A* to C’s, including English and Maths, compared with a national average of 47.2%.

And this year 0.7% of Reading schools' students left school at 16 with no qualifications, compared with 1.4% nationally. On this measure, Reading has risen from 114th out of 150 councils in 2007 to 6th in 2008. Education has been a major priority for Labour nationally and locally, with a great deal of investment in buildings, equipment and staff, and we are delighted to see that paying off in better outcomes for Reading children. Jon Hartley, Lead Councillor for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: 'These results are Reading’s best ever. They represent another excellent achievement for our secondary schools which are going from strength to strength with ever more improvements being reported year on year. Many congratulations to teachers and pupils on these successes!'
