22/06/08 : Silent witness for the people of Zimbabwe
Anneliese Dodds, Labour candidate for Reading East, was among Labour Councillors and party members who supported the march of silent witness for the people of Zimbabwe on Saturday 21 June, starting from Forbury Gardens at 2pm.

Anneliese Dodds said: “Food shortages in what once was the breadbasket of Africa, thousands forced from their homes, inflation over 1000000%, opposition leaders killed or imprisoned, opposition supporters threatened and beaten – the evils Robert Mugabe is inflicting on the people of Zimbabwe are without parallel anywhere in the world.

“We need to show our solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe, to support them in wanting Mugabe out of power and out of their lives, and to press our Government to continue to work with others to isolate this odious regime and bring it to an end. Every little helps, showing that we care helps, and I hope this march will be well-supported.”

Former Mayor Bet Tickner added: “Many Zimbabweans in Reading have close family and friends still living in Zimbabwe. At a time when thousands are being brutally beaten and intimidated by Mugabe’s militia or have their ID cards confiscated so they can’t get food aid, we should be saying to Zimbabweans that we are with you. Mugabe will not relinquish power, and international action will be needed to end Zimbabwe’s ruinous nightmare.”
