20/05/08 : Labour Group Nominations for new Cabinet
Following negotiations with the other political parties on the new Reading Borough Council, Reading’s Labour Group is nominating nine Labour Councillors, one fewer than last time, to form Reading’s Cabinet at the Council’s Annual General Meeting tonight. They are:

Leader of the Council Jo Lovelock

Deputy Leader of the Council Tony Page

Lead Councillors:

Children’s Services Pete Ruhemann

Communities & Neighbourhoods Bet Tickner

Community Care & Health Mike Orton

Culture & Sport Graeme Hoskin

Education & Life-long Learning Jon Hartley

Environment & Sustainability Paul Gittings

Housing John Ennis

It is proposed that Leader Jo Lovelock should retain her former responsibilities for Corporate Services, while Deputy Tony Page takes charge of Strategic Planning & Transport.

Two of the Lead Councillor portfolios are renamed to reflect new and evolving challenges. Bet Tickner at Communities & Neighbourhoods will have responsibility for relations with the voluntary sector but also lead on locality working – the Council is developing neighbourhood structures on the same boundaries as the police and the Primary Care Trust – and involving local communities. With the Council’s Climate Change Panel beginning work, Paul Gittings will be working with the Council and with partners to respond to the huge challenge that climate change is bringing to us all.

Jo Lovelock says: “This is a strong team, and we are looking forward to the work ahead in terms of the priorities we identified in our manifesto, but recognise that with the opposition parties now chairing the Scrutiny panels they will also be highlighting issues on which we will need to work with them. I think our discussions with the other parties about how to share responsibility in the new Council have gone well and I think that bodes well for Reading.”
