07/05/08 : Jo Lovelock elected to lead Labour Group
Norcot Councillor Jo Lovelock was this evening elected unopposed as Leader of the Reading Borough Labour Group, with Abbey Councillor Tony Page, also unopposed, as Deputy Leader.
Cllr. Lovelock says: “Labour in Reading is looking to the future with renewed purpose. For months the Tories have been strutting round town talking about how they were going to sweep into power. Three weeks ago David Cameron came to the Madejski Stadium and said that the Tories were ready to take over, but last Thursday Reading showed that it was by no means ready to be taken over! The Tories did well in their heartlands, north of the Thames, but could only take two seats south of the river, failing dismally in Abbey, Minster, Park, and Southcote which they had had believed were in the bag.
“Labour put forward a positive manifesto for the town, while the Tories had nothing to offer, and they’ve been found out. In a bad year for us nationally, the Tories in Reading were unable to convince the people they were fit to take office.
”We, of course, recognise the new political situation on the council and we will be working to find a constructive approach, looking not just at the ideas of other parties but also at those of many partners and local residents.”
Earlier in the meeting, David Sutton, Labour Leader since 1995, who lost his seat in Katesgrove, thanked the party for their support over the years and was given an emotional standing ovation.
The other posts filled at the meeting were as follows:
Chair Peter Jones (Norcot)
Vice-Chair Deborah Edwards (Southcote)
Secretary Mohammed Ayub (Abbey)
