02/05/08 : Labour gives Tories a bloody nose in Reading
Tory boasts of being about to take overall control of Reading Borough Council, boasts repeated by David Cameron when he visited the Madejski Stadium three weeks ago, were shown to be just hollow when elections on 1 May left Labour as the largest party on the Council.

Labour now has 20 seats, the Tories 18 and the Liberal Democrats 8. Labour held seven wards (Abbey, Battle, Minster, Norcot, Park, Southcote and Whitley), the Tories, despite throwing huge resources into the campaign, won six wards and the LibDems three. Sadly, Labour Leader of the Council David Sutton lost his Katesgrove seat by just thirty votes.

In a bad day for Labour nationally, Labour's results in Reading show our strength locally in that Reading Labour Party has once again bucked the national trend.

We would like to thank all those who showed their faith in Reading Labour Party and Reading's Labour Council by voting Labour in these elections, and pledge to continue to work hard to serve the people of Reading in the years ahead.
