31/03/08 : Labour’s pledges to older people
Reading Labour Party today launched a “mini-manifesto” pledge for older people, Labour: Caring for Pensioners.
Mike Orton, Lead Councillor for Community Care & Health, says that Labour Reading is determined to keep faith with its senior citizens. “At the last meeting of the Cabinet we resolved to maintain our existing criteria for home care, the criteria that have been chopped back by the Tories in Wokingham and West Berkshire. Reading Tories have said that Reading’s spend on this is ‘unacceptable’ and if they followed their Tory neighbours then over 1700 Reading people would lose their home care.
“But,” he added, “Labour’s commitment to older people is not just about home care. We have put together a mini-manifesto for them covering the full range of services.”
Reading Labour’s pledges to older people are:
From tomorrow, April 1st, Reading Pensioners will be able to travel for free by bus anywhere in England thanks to the Labour government.
Labour in Reading led the way in providing over 65s with free bus travel and will continue to offer pensioners over 65 free travel at any time anywhere in the Greater Reading area.
Labour has pledged to support Readibus, a dial-a-ride service which now also accepts pensioners’ bus passes so travel is free.
Labour will build Extra Care Sheltered Housing across Reading to support older people who want to maintain their independence.
Labour promises to fund voluntary groups that help pensioners, including Age Concern, Princess Royal Carers’ Centre, Citizens Advice and Reading Community Welfare Rights Unit.
Labour will continue to provide home care to older people with substantial or moderate need, unlike Tory run Wokingham or West Berkshire who have cut these vital services.
Labour Reading works with the NHS to make sure that pensioners stay healthy as long as possible and if they do have to go into hospital that they get the care they need when they return home.
