23/01/08 : Kennet Valley Plan Panel was wrong
Reading Labour Party is campaigning to protect the Kennet floodplain from Prudential’s proposals to build 7,500 houses north of the M4 at Reading.
Martin Salter MP and Councillors from Southcote and Coley Park are fighting recent recommendations by the Panel looking at the draft South East Plan to earmark the area for development.
Martin Salter and Southcote Councillor Pete Ruhemann have joined forces with Burghfield LibDem Councillor Royce Longton in an open letter to Yvette Copper, MP, the Minister for Housing and Planning, asking her to reject then Panel's recommendation.
Petitions have already been circulated in Burghfield and Martin Salter has launched a similar petition in his Reading West constituency. A demonstration is being organised beside the river Kennet at Burghfield this Saturday, unveiling a banner saying 'Protect the Kennet Floodplain'.
Martin Salter said "The Panel's recommendations are seriously flawed and take no account of the increased flood risk that would be caused by building on the functional floodplain. I am urging everyone who cares about the future of South West Reading to sign up to our campaign so that I can present the most powerful case possible to planning ministers to protect the Kennet Meadows."
