16/12/07 : Candidates announced for 2008
Reading & District Labour Party has all its candidates in place for the 2008 Borough Council elections, when the control of the Council will be at stake.

Leader of the Council David Sutton will be standing again in Katesgrove ward, and Deputy Leader Jo Lovelock will be standing again in Norcot.

Three other members of the Cabinet will also be standing again: Tony Page (Lead Councillor for Community Action) in Abbey, Jon Hartley (Education & Lifelong Leaning) in Park, and Mike Orton (Community Care) in Whitley.

Sadly, two members of the Cabinet are having to step down for work reasons: Tom Crisp (Planning & Transport) as he begins his training as a solicitor in London and Steve Waite (Environment & Consumer Affairs) whose work as a union officer has been taking him out of Reading.

Hoping to come back to the Council to take over from Tom in Battle Ward is former Councillor Gul Muwaz Khan, who lives in the ward. Gul is a taxi driver and a prominent member of the local Pakistani community.

Labour’s candidate in Caversham will be Matt Rodda, who lives in Blenheim Road, Caversham and is a former journalist and then a civil servant, but is now working as a project manager for three national educational charities.

Labour’s candidate for Church Ward is Marian Livingston, a retired teacher who is a Governor of Blagdon Road Children’s Centre and Ridgeway Primary School. She stood in Church in May, and is hoping to take over from Chris Goodall, who is retiring after more than thirty years representing the ward.

Richard McKenzie, who represented Kentwood from 2003-7, is standing there again, as, after seven years as a Kentwood Councillor, Viki Lloyd is stepping down to pursue new challenges. Richard worked tirelessly as a Councillor for improvements to the Old Norcot estate, on planning and transport issues, on anti-social behaviour, and to protect Tilehurst Allotments.

In Minster, Labour’s candidate is Debbie Watson, a trade union officer with UNITE. She has been campaigning locally on many issues, including the battle to save Kennet Meadows, and is hoping to take over from Catherine Wilton, who will reluctantly step down following promotion to a senior post in the NHS - and also to spend more time with her baby daughter.

Peter Kayes will be seeking to return to the Council in Redlands, which he represented from 2003-7. He’s been campaigning on anti-social behaviour, the closure of Erleigh Road Post Office, the University’s master plan and many other issues. Former Mayor Riaz Chaudhri is leaving the Council so as to be able to give more support to his elderly parents in Pakistan.
