11/12/07 : Labour fights to save Post Offices
Martin Salter MP, Anneliese Dodds and Labour Councillors in the wards affected have sparked off campaigns to stop the closure of local Post Offices in Kentwood Hill, Wantage Road, Erleigh Road and Basingstoke Road.
In Reading West, Martin Salter and Kentwood Labour Councillor Viki Lloyd placed petition forms in the Kentwood Hill post office for residents to sign to keep it open. The Wantage Road Post Office serves Battle and Norcot Wards and Martin has joined Labour Councillors from both wards to rally constituents against its closure.
On the day the proposals became public, Martin Salter said ''Today I launched a campaign to keep these post offices open. It is absolutely vital that the voices of local residents are heard by Post Office Ltd and I urge as many residents as possible to sign the petition to enable me to demonstrate strong local support for these vital community post offices. I intend to press the consumer watchdog Postwatch to appeal against these planned closures which will particularly affect the elderly, vulnerable and disabled.''
In Reading East, Anneliese Dodds is working with Redlands Councillor Riaz Chaudhri and candidate Peter Kayes to advise local people how to oppose the closure of the Blenheim Road Post Office. They've made this the lead story in their latest Redlands Matters. Katesgrove Councillors David Sutton and Richard Stainthorp are supporting the campaign to keep the Basingstoke Road Post Office open too.
