30/10/07 : Council to consult on new theatres and new library
Proposals for a theatre complex to replace the outdated Hexagon and for a new central library will soon be brought forward for consultation. They are to be included in a new master plan for the civic offices area.
The Council has already agreed to replace the Civic Offices, which are inefficient, expensive to run and asbestos-ridden, on the Hosier Street site facing on to St Mary's Butts, and the aim is to build the new theatre and library, together with two high towers to help pay for them, roughly where the Civic Offices and the Hexagon are now.
Labour's Deputy Leader Jo Lovelock says: "We want to seize this opportunity to provide new facilities fit for the 21st century, and, alongside the new development at Chatham Place, to regenerate this part of our town."
