29/10/07 : New plans for extra care housing
Reading's Labour Council is planning to provide 240 extra care places for elderly people over the next 3-5 years, as part of a new strategy to enable them to live at home as independently as possible, but with access to support should they need it.
Reading, unlike its Conservative neighbours, is committed to supporting senior citizens with 'significant' and 'greater moderate' need, Wokingham and West Berkshire now support people with 'critical' need only. Up to 2,000 people in Reading could lose support from the Council if Reading were to restrict its services to the elderly in the same way.
In extra care housing, each person has their own self-contained flat (bedroom, living room, kitchen, accessible bathroom), restaurant facilities, security of tenure, flexible care and support services with an emphasis on promoting independence, and full wheel-chair access throughout.
Lead Councillor for Community Care & Health, Mike Orton, says: "These plans show Labour's commitment to caring for our elderly people, our recognition of what they need, deserve and are owed. We are reshaping our services to meet a very real need, one that will grow and increase in the years ahead."
