9/10/07 : Sir Brian Briscoe to lead Commission on Traffic
Sir Brian Briscoe has been appointed to lead the independent commission, set up by the Council, to examine traffic problems in central Reading. Sir Brian, whose previous roles include Chief Executive of the Local Government Association (LGA), Chief Executive of Hertfordshire County Council and County Planning Officer for Kent County Council, will be considering current and projected issues and the Inner Distribution Road (IDR).
All proposed physical works to convert the IDR to one-way operation have been suspended while the Commission's reconsideration is underway, and the Traffic Orders relating to this have been quashed.
Council Leader, Labour's David Sutton, says: "We need first to establish a consensus about the problems to be addressed. I hope the Commission will take evidence from local businesses, large and small, from local transport operators and from local people, and look at likely future developments such as Reading Station and the Sackville Properties site between the station and Friar Street. Then they can build up a picture of traffic now and likely traffic in the future. And secondly I hope Sir Brian and his colleagues will look at all schemes that may come forward from any quarter and make recommedations as to which will work best for Reading.
"My colleagues and I have no hang-ups about a one-way IDR or any other scheme for the town centre, we just want to get the best for our town and are looking to Sir Brian to help us do that, so we have agreed to be bound by his recommendations."
