1/10/07 : 35% of household waste recycled or composted
The changes Reading Borough Council made in its refuse collection last year have resulted in 35% of all household waste being recycled or composted in April-June 2007, as against just 22% in the same period last year.
This achievement was reported to the Environment Scrutiny Panel, though officers acknowledged also that there had been some problems, particularly around bins on streets, bin storage at some blocks of flats, HMO's and student accommodation, and the emptying of contaminated bins. To address these problems the Council will:
Instruct collection crews to return bins onto the property where residents regularly leave them on the pavements;
Take enforcement action against residents with adequate space who continue to place bins on pavements;
Offer alternative arrangements to households that do not have space to store bins;
Look specifically at issues round blocks of flats, whether Council, Housing Association or private.
Steve Waite, Labour's Lead Councillor for Environment & Consumer Affairs, says: "I am delighted recycling has increased and hope we will increase it further still, while dealing with the very real teething problems that have been identified in the new service.We all need to work together to deal responsibly with our waste, that is just part of the legacy we have to pass on to future generations."
