26/9/07 : Neighbourhood Policing comes to Reading
Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Sarah Thornton updated Reading's Labour Cabinet on Tuesday about plans to complete the roll-out of neighbourhood policing across the town.
Reading has been divided into sixteen neighbourhoods, and neighbourhood teams are already live in thirteen of them, with Tilehurst, Norcot and Southcote to follow over the next three months. The grand total includes four Inspectors, five sergeants, 29 Neighbourhood police officers and 34 Police Community Support Officers, and the teams will be supported by Neighbourhood Advisory Groups of local residents who will advise on local priorities and hotspots.
Labour's Lead Councillor for Community Action & Regeneration, Tony Page, who represents the Borough on the Police Authority, says: "These neighbourhood teams have been very well received and have begun to make a very real difference to crime and to the fear of crime. The teams are dedicated to their communities, except for major emergencies like a terrorist attack, get to know them well and really take on board their concerns."
