24/9/07 : Go-ahead for Dee Park Redevelopment
Reading Borough Council's Cabinet has chosen the Dee Park Partnership, led by Catalyst Housing Group, as its preferred partner to redevelop the Dee Park estate in West Reading.
This follows four years of consultation, led by a committee of Dee Park residents, the Community Regeneration Action Group (CRAG), who have been working closely with local Labour Councillors and with the Council.
The plan includes new housing (all blocks of flats on the estate and a small number of bungalows will be demolished), new community and youth facilities and a new extended primary school and children's centre at the heart of the estate. Open space and play facilities will be improved and residents will have better access to services including health care, education and training. Landscaping will make the estate feel much greener.
Norcot Labour Councillor Jo Lovelock, also Deputy Leader of the Council, says: "This has been very much a partnership between us as Councillors and local residents, and I would like to thank everybody who has become involved in the consultation, particularly members of CRAG who have given up so much time to ensure that the plans are what residents want. This is a really exciting time for Dee Park, and will mean huge improvements for lcoal people, but in particular getting rid of the 1960s flats and replacing them with decent homes."
