21/8/07 : Five New Children's Centres to open during 2008
Public consultation has started on planning applications for two new Children's Centres, in Caversham and Coley Park, and three more Children's Centres are also expected to open next year, in East Reading, Katesgrove and on the Oxford Road. Another is planned as part of the Dee Park regeneration. The Borough already has four Children's Centres, two in South Reading, one in Southcote and one on the Old Norcot estate.
The first application is for a £1,875,000 children's centre in Caversham, close to the existing community centre in Amersham Road, incorporating Caversham Nursery School and takes into account suggestions put forward by residents during a wide-ranging consultation last year.
The second is for a £320,000 centre to be built on the St Mary and All Saints (CE) Primary School site in Wensley Road, where work will be co-ordinated by Parents and Children Together (PACT), a charity that works with the Anglican Diocese of Oxford to nurture family life and has a well-established relationship with the school.
Pete Ruhemann, Labour's Lead Councillor for Children's Services, says: "Children's centres are a tr413 Oxford Road, Reading, RG30 1HAemendous asset for local parents. The services they offer include childcare, advice for parents on child development, home safety and healthy eating, play opportunities, computer skills classes for parents, first aid training, financial advice and information, advice on work and training opportunities, as well as holiday and breakfast clubs.
